Dubai City is a prime example of how a Middle Eastern city has adapted to modern times. It is a true delight to see and how the lovely charm of Dubai and its old rustic Arabic structures blend with incredible modern skyscrapers which line the skyline of Bur Dubai.

Bur Dubai is considerably more lively then neighbouring Deira across the Dubai creek.
Bur Dubai seems to be filled with many restaurants, shops, large commercial real estate projects. Huge modern shopping malls can be found all over Bur Dubai which sell all the latest fashion goods and the most luxurious consumer products.

Bur Dubai is also known as Dubai city which is mainly due to that the real financial centre of Dubai is located in Bur Dubai Dubai Directory and not Deira. Local Dubai authorities all have their offices based in this side of the Dubai creek as well. The Dubai World Trade Centre is one of the worlds busiest meeting and convention centres.
You will be able to find almost daily some type of International meeting, congress or convention being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre in Bur Dubai or at one of the other convention and meeting halls in Dubai.
Bur Dubai is not only a thriving financial and commercial area as many foreign residents have opted for living in the Bur Dubai area. There are several large rise residential complexes to be found in Bur Dubai.
These Bur Dubai apartment buildings are found grouped together in gated communities. Residents are able to find all types of great complimentary services and facilities in these Bur Dubai compounds including swimming pools, tennis courts and gyms.

Bur Dubai has more to offer visitors then only office buildings, exclusive shopping malls and large financial institutions. The Dubai guide has visited a variety of attractions and activities and we have included the nicest ones in our guide.Al Shindafgha Area of Bur DubaiA nice area in Bur Dubai to start exploring Dubai City is the area known as Al Shindagha. This part of Bur Dubai is located at the mouth of Dubai creek. The heritage and diving village are located in this part of Bur Dubai and visitors can also visit the nearby Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum's House. Only a few minutes away from this Bur Dubai attraction is the famous Dubai museum which is well worth visiting.Diwan Building in DubaiThe Diwan is located opposite the Dubai museum. The Diwan houses the main administrative body of the government of Dubai as well as the private office of the ruler of Dubai.

The Diwan building is an impressive building which was constructed in this area of Bur Dubai in 1990. Diwan is a low rise building which immediately grabs the attention of people passing the Dubai government building due to its white exterior and its black railings.Bur Dubai Grand MosqueBur Dubai also has a number of impressive Mosques and the Grand Mosque should be visited by anyone visiting Dubai. The Grand Mosque is located near to the Diwan and up to 1200 worshippers can pray inside the Mosque at any given moment.

This important Bur Dubai Mosque was renovated some time ago for a record breaking 16 million Dhs. What makes this Bur Dubai Mosque stand out from other nearby Mosques is the fact hat the minaret at the Grand Mosque is nearly 70 meters tall and that the Mosque has 54 beautiful domes.Bur Dubai District BastakiyaThe Bur Dubai area known as the Bastakiya district is a more traditional and less modern area of Dubai city. Visitors wanted to experience and feel a more Arabic and traditional atmosphere should visit the Bastakiya district.
The walkway houses a large number of lovely outdoor restaurants serving excellent local Dubai cuisine. At more then one of these establishments it is common to find guests enjoying the Shisha pipe with their friends of relatives.
Another interesting sight to visit in this area of Bur Dubai are the Barajeels. These wind towers were constructed as a way to cool down a building or construction very much the same as modern air-conditioning units do.
This Bur Dubai area is considered to be one of the oldest settlements of Dubai with the first structures being constructed during the first quarter of the 19th century.

This district of Dubai City was known during those days as the Bastakiya Chok and become home for large numbers of Iranian traders from the Bastak region. As Dubai was under populated during those days, the rulers of Dubai created incentives for people to migrate from elsewhere to Dubai.
Deira is located to the east of the Dubai creek and Bur Dubai. If you are coming from Bur Dubai and you would like to reach Deira, you will need to cross the Dubai creek.

You can cross the Dubai creek at three different locations from either the Bur Dubai or Deira side. Alternatively you can also use the Dubai water taxis to take you from the Bur Dubai side to Deira.
Deira is often considered to somewhat less developed and commercialized then neighboring Bur Dubai. Many visitors might assume that this is the case as many commercial and financial activities are found in the Bur Dubai region which includes for example the Dubai World Trade Centre and the upscale area at Sheikh Zayed Road.
Deira Souks in DubaiBusiness activities however are found throughout Deira although possibly in a somewhat different way. Some of the oldest trading areas in Dubai are located in Deira which are the different souks.
The gold souk is a prime example of trading activities and of the wealth and prosperity that can be found in Deira.Deira vs Bur DubaiExploring Deira and Bur Dubai are two separate experiences. The main reason why people always consider Bur Dubai to be much wealthier then Deira is because Bur Dubai is a very modern section of Dubai with many large and new buildings and shopping malls.

Deira on the other side consists of meandering and narrow streets which are lined with many small merchants. Coffee shops and all appears somewhat unorganized to tourists.Shopping in DeiraFor those of you that enjoy shopping at large modern shopping malls then please do not worry. You can find these type of shopping malls in the Deira side of the Dubai creek as well.

Many merchants have recently closed up shop in Bur Dubai and relocated to Deira to open up their new shop due to the considerably lower rents in Deira.Deira Evening HoursThe streets during the evening in Deira are much more alive than in Bur Dubai. Many people enjoy dinner or simply have an espresso at one of many outdoor restaurants and coffee shops whilst looking at people walk past their terrace.

The lively atmosphere in Deira during the evening hours certainly is one reason why you should consider staying at one of the hotels in Deira during your next visit to Dubai.Dhow WharfageA great place in Deira to visit for tourists is the Dhow Wharfage. Enjoy a nice stroll along the Dhow Wharfage and have a look at the local merchants. These merchants in the Deira side of Dubai can be compared to market salesmen in Europe.
The Dubai merchants found at the Dhow Wharfage offer shoppers all sorts of products which many include fresh vegetables, Plasma televisions and even occasionally vehicles. The atmosphere that can be enjoyed at the Dhow Wharfage is frequently compared to how the original Dubai shopping experience and atmosphere would have been like in the old days.

Deira does not only consist of small roads and small dwellings. If you walk along the Deira side of the Dubai creek, you will find a number of modern and beautiful commercial real estate properties.Modern Architecture in DeiraMany visitors are most impressed by a tall modern building that has a large round object on top of the building which looks like a giant golf ball.

The building in question is the Etisalat Telecommunications building and is a prime example of the type of building that are build around Deira and the rest of the United Arab Emirates using its own style of modern architecture.
The “pregnant lady” building is another impressive office building located in Deira and this building is also a prime example of the type of modern architecture that can be found all over Dubai. The building is officially known as the National Bank of Dubai building however local residents in Deira and the rest of Dubai quickly named it the “pregnant lady”.

The building’s exterior is made completely out of glass which looks spectacular when the sun shines on the office building at certain angles. The National Bank of Dubai building in Deira stands erect like an impressive convex mirror.Deira at SunsetWhen the sun starts to set over the skyline of Deira then you should head over to the other side of the Dubai creek. If you head towards to British Embassy then you will encounter a lovely cornice located very near to the embassy.

This particular Corniche offers some of the most amazing views in Dubai. While the sun sets, you are able to witness the remarkable difference between the old Dubai and the more modern version of Dubai and Deira.
You will be able to see fascinating moored trading Dhows which are located near to this particular Corniche. You can witness the Dhows trading goods with other traders and selling products to customers on the shore.
What makes the sight even nicer is that the trading dhows are being reflected by the water of Dubai creek as well as from surrounding massive glass commercial and residential buildings along with the orange light from the sun set. Make sure to take your camera with you!Markets in DeiraAnother Deira location that every Dubai visitor should take time for to visit is the market located directly adjacent to the Deira Abra station.
What makes this Deira market so special is the fact that it is the oldest market in all of Dubai. This Deira market sells a variety of items however most merchants at this market seem to have specialized on household goods.Deira Spice SoukWhen you are finished at the old Deira market then why not stop of at the nearby spice Souk. Many tourists visiting Dubai thoroughly enjoy visiting the spice souk in Deira as it’s a true pleasure walking around this particular Deira souk.

Your senses will be doing overtime as you walk past and smell the many different types of spices that are being sold in the spice souk of Deira. The intensive aroma of the different spices which includes valuable yellow saffron, cinnamon and aniseed, entices many visitors into purchasing some spices at this Deira Souk.
Other items that are offered by the shops in the Deira spice souk include various herbs and special perfumed oil which local healers and pharmacists have been using to make their own special and traditional medicine for centuries.
Dubai Gold Souk in DeiraAnother Deira souk runs adjacent to the spice souk and this souk is the most famous all the souks located in Dubai. The world renowned Deira gold souk has been the Valhalla of gold markets for millions of women. The collection of gold being offered to shoppers at the gold souk in Deira must certainly be one of the finest and extensive collections of gold being sold anywhere in the world.
Shoppers at the Deira gold souk walk street after street in awe as they walk past the many gold shops. The windows of the gold shops at the Deira gold souk appear to be completely filled with thousands of beautifully designed 22 and 24 carat gold items.

What makes shopping for gold at this Deira souk so special and worthwhile is the fact that the gold prices are among the lowest in the world due to low gold prices as well as no sales tax.
The gold shops do create custom made items if you have any special wishes and they generally work fast and offer high quality work. If you purchase a golden necklace in Paris or New York then the price of the necklace would also be determined by the designer or gold smith who created the gold necklace.
In the Deira gold souk this does not occur. All gold is sold by its weight which means that you are able to purchase gold at this Deira market from famous designers at incredibly cheap prices. The final price of your purchase is once again determined by your negotiation skills as the gold items are not price tagged.
Deira is a great destination within Dubai and please do take the time to explore all the wonders and hidden treasures that Deira offers to all its visitors.

The Dubai Creek
Dubai Creek is located in the centre of Dubai. The Dubai creek separates the Dubai airport area and Deira area from the Bur Dubai which is also known as Dubai city.Dubai Creek SettlementAlong the Dubai creek is also where historians inform us that the first Dubai settlement was build. Remains of this early Dubai settlement were found at the mouth of the Dubai creek.

The creek in Dubai was originally smaller in size however as the land along the coast quickly filled up with residents and businesses, people were forced to go land inwards.Creek EnlargementAs little water was available land inwards due to the desert type landscape, the Dubai creek was enlarged by the local authorities through intensive dredging.
The Dubai creek also was used by boats for transporting goods and people so it was important that these boats could go land inwards as far as possible.Dubai Creek Crossing PointsIf you would like to cross the Dubai creek then there currently are three locations where you can do this.

# Al Garhoud Bridge - Furthest crossing point from the coast# Al Makthoum Bridge# Al Shindagha - Closest crossing to the coast.Dubai Water TaxiYou can also cross the Dubai creek by means of a water taxi which local residents call Abra. These special Dubai water taxis, Abras, can be found all along the creek in Dubai. Abras are used not only for simply crossing to the other but also for going to a location up or downstream. Many local Dubai residents therefore also use the Dubai water taxis as a daily Dubai transportation method.
The Abras transport on average nearly 15.000 passengers daily between Deira and Bur Dubai.
We do recommend for visitors to take a Dubai water taxi when crossing the Dubai creek. You will first of all be able to enjoy the beautiful views that passengers have from the Abras.
Dubai AbraWhat might be even a better reason to use an Abra is that especially during rush hour, the three Dubai creek crossing points become congested and traffic jams can be spotted daily.
If you are in a rush to get to the other side of the Dubai creek then it can be much quicker if you simply use the services of a water taxi in Dubai.Dubai CornicheA Dubai Corniche is what local residents call the promenades that can be found on a large number of locations along the Dubai creek.

Many joggers can be spotted daily at a corniche in Dubai.Dubai Water Taxi CharterIf you wish to charter an entire Dubai water taxi for yourself then that can be arranged easily. There are no fixed prices for chartering an Abra.
You must arrange the price with the captain of the Dubai water taxi before getting in and getting underway.
Depending on your negotiation skills, a Dubai creek water taxi can be chartered for 30 minutes for around 35 - 45 Dhs.Views from Dubai CreekThere are a number of beautiful locations where you can go and there are especially a number of impressive buildings which you can view from within the Dubai creek water taxi.
